  • 1〔とめる／阻止する〕
    • 戦争(暴徒)を留める stop the war (mobs); युद्ध (हुल) रोक्नु *लाईはあってもなくても構わない
    • あらゆる悪の道筋から自分の足を留める restrain one’s feet from every bad path; आफ्नो खुट्टालाई हरेक खराब चालबाट रोकिरहनु
    • 良心の声は,間違った歩みから留めてくれる The voice of our conscience can prevent us from taking a wrong course. अन्तस्करणको आवाजले गलत मार्गदेखि जोगाउँछ ।
    • 敵の攻撃を留めた We repulsed the enemy’s attack. हामीले शत्रुको आक्रमणलाई सफलतापूर्वक थाम्यौं ।
    • 彼は盛土で流れかけた水を留めた He dammed up the water by the fill. उसले आली (/ धुर) लगाएर बग्न लागेको पानी थाम्यो (/ टिकायो / थमौती गऱ्यो) ।
    • 上映会に出席していた人たちが,家の中に押し入ろうとする暴徒を留めてくれた Those who attended the film showing held off the mob’s attempts to break into the house. फिल्म हेर्न आएकाहरूले नै त्यो जमातलाई घरभित्र छिर्नदेखि रोके ।

  • 2〔抑える／制限する〕
    • 長い間続いた反乱を留める suppress (/ put down) the long-run riot; लामो समयदेखि चलिरहेको विद्रोहलाई मत्थर पार्नु
    • 荷物は最小限に留めてでかけた We went out with our luggage to the bare minimum. हामी सकेसम्म थोरै सामान लिएर गयौं ।
    • 留められていた水が軍勢の上に崩れ落ちた The towered waters crashed over the military. अग्ला-अग्ला पानीका पर्खालहरू ढलेर सेनाहरूलाई बगाए ।
    • 発言したい時はわずかな言葉に留めてください if you choose to say something, limit yourself to a brief comment or two. यदि केही बताउन चाहनुहुन्छ भने छोट्करीमा बताउनुहोस् ।

  • 3〔元の形を残す〕
    • 次の言葉を心に留めていたいものです Let us take to heart the following words: हामी निम्न शब्दलाई नबिर्सौं :
    • ライオンの空腹が満たされるころには,獲物は元の姿を留めていなかった After a lion has satisfied its hunger, the victim was unrecognizable. भोक मेटिएपछि सिंहले शिकारलाई चिन्न नसकिने हालतमा छोड्यो ।
  • 4〔痕跡を残す〕
    • 記憶に留められる be (/ kept) in one’s memory; ~को सम्झनामा हुनु (/ रहनु)
    • 歴史の中で記録に永遠に留められる be preserved in a permanent record as part of history; इतिहासको स्थायी भाग बन्नु
    • 沈没船の中で発見される金製品の多くは,何百年たっていてもその輝きを留めている Many gold artifacts discovered in sunken vessels still retain their luster after hundreds of years. डुबेको जहाजमा भेट्टिएका सुनले बनाइएका पुराना वस्तुहरूको टलक सयौं वर्षपछि पनि जस्ताको तस्तै भेटिएको छ ।

  • 5〔後に残す〕
    • 妻子を郷里に留めて上京した He went to Kathmandu, leaving his family in his hometown. परिवार घरमा छोडेर राजधानी गयो ।
    • 宴会に持ち込まれた幾らかのものを留めている He has kept (/ set aside) some things that were brought for the feast. उसले भोजका लागि ल्याइएका केही सामान जगेडा (/ बचत / सञ्चय) राखेको छ ।
    • 犯罪人の死体は夜通し杭の上にとどめられるべきではなかった The dead body of a criminal should have not stayed all night on the stake. अपराधीको लाश रातभरि रूखमा झुण्ड्याएर राख्नु हुँदैनथ्यो ।
  • 6〔引き止める〕
    • 子供を家の中に留めておく keep a child inside the house; बच्चालाई घर बाहिर जान रोक्नु (/ नदिनु)
    • 地球を正しい位置にとどめている引力 gravity which keeps our earth in the right position; पृथ्वीलाई ठिक्क ठाउँमा राख्ने गुरुत्वाकर्षण शक्ति
    • 帰ろうとする彼を留めた As he was leaving, we stopped (/ detained) him. हामीले घरमा जान खोज्ने तिनलाई रोक्यौं ।
